The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has granted 350 000 Euro to the VKS project: Knowledge Space Lab: mapping knowledge interactively.

The project “Knowledge Space Lab” contributes to the new research area of “maps of science”. The project addresses the difference between representing scholarly knowledge in (external) classification systems (such as thesauri, ontologies, bibliographic systems) and “internal” representations based on data- and user-tagging (such as network analysis, user annotations/tagging, folksonomies).
The project duration is 18 months (September 21, 2009 – March 1, 2011).
The project team consists of a postdoc with a natural sciences/mathematics/computer sciences background (PostDoc math), a postdoc with a social sciences/humanities background (PostDoc hum) and a scientific programmer (SciProg). The project leader is Dr. Andrea Scharnhorst.

Smiljana Antonijevic received a grant from the University of Leipzig

The grant has been given to her to participate in the workshop ‘Textual analysis in the Digital Humanities: Methods and Tools’ at the European Summer School Culture and Technology, University of Leipzig, July 27-August 1, 2009.

HITIME – a project funded in the CATCH2 programme of NWO

NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, announced on December 8 that it awarded funding from the CATCH (Continuous Access to Cultural Heritage) thematic programme to the new HITIME (Historical Timeline Mining and Extraction). HITIME aims to develop a text mining toolkit for historical texts. The project addresses major challenges in the area of text mining, such as the language-independent detection of significant events, time expressions, historical spelling variations and the ability to cope with stylistic diversity.
Partners in the project are: TiCC (Tilburg centre for Creative Computer, Tilburg University), IISH (International Institute of Social History), Institute of History at the University of Leiden and the VKS (Virtual Knowledge Studio). The project leader is prof. Antal van den Bosch (TiCC), and the project duration is four years.

NWO Grant

NWO had granted 495,000 euro, a middle large investment subsidy, for the project Circulation of Knowledge and learned practices in the 17th Century Dutch Republic. A web-based Humanities’ Collaboratory on correspondences. in which historians, linguists, information specialist work together in a collaboratory around a dataset of 20,000 letters of Dutch scholars of the 17th Century. The collaboratory aims at an annotation and study of these letters to get insight in the development of knowledge exchange and the development of debates since the 17th Century. Participants are the
Descartes Centre of Utrecht University, the Huygens Institute, the National Library, the VKS and DANS. The VKS participates in three work packages: a) Tools for conceptualization and contextualization b) Visualization, interface and usability and c) Exploitation and dissemination.

Hublab-2

Recently the VKS-Erasmus got a SURF grant (37.459 Euro) for the one year project Hublab-2 Toward successful implementation of the Liferay platform in historical research continues and deepens the research into scholarly collaboration in the Humanities, in particular with respect to the use of virtual research environments by social and economic historians.

In a previous project, collaborative platforms were built using the Open Source program Liferay. In this project, we will analyze in depth the user experience with this platform, in the context of the overall communication and research practices of the working teams involved. Furthermore, the platform will be augmented in an iterative cycle of technical improvements and evaluations, in which the VKS will work closely with researchers and ICT staff of the International Institute of Social History.

Webgebaseerde samenwerking tussen onderzoekers gestimuleerd

Een innovatieproject van de Universiteitsbibliotheek van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (EUR) en Erasmus Studio heeft in het kader van het SURFshare programma een subsidie ontvangen van € 30.000 euro. Het gaat om het project Virtual Knowledge Studio Collaboratory – Linking Scholarly Networks and Disciplines.

Doel van dit project is het creëren van een webgebaseerde samenwerkingsomgeving, een zogenaamd collaboratory, waarmee onderzoekers vanuit verschillende locaties en disciplines kunnen samenwerken en elkaars resultaten en bronnen kunnen delen.

Het project is een initiatief van de Universiteitsbibliotheek EUR (UB EUR) en de Erasmus Studio (ES), het onderzoeksinstituut aan de EUR dat zich bezighoudt met e-research in de economische, sociale en geestes-wetenschappen.
Naast de ES zijn deelnemende instituten aan dit collaboratory de Virtual Knowledge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences (VKS) van de Koninklijke Academie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) en de Maastricht Studio van de Universiteit van Maastricht. Het collaboratory zal worden ontworpen door de Universiteitsbibliotheek EUR in samenwerking met het Econometrisch instituut van de EUR.

Virtual Knowledge Studio Collaboratory krijgt subsidie van SURFshare

SURFfoundation stimuleert webgebaseerde samenwerking tussen onderzoekers
SURFshare kent subsidie toe aan zes innovatieprojecten

Het SURFshare programma kent vandaag € 170.000 toe aan zes innovatieprojecten met een totale begroting van € 360.000. Hiermee geeft het programma een impuls aan het online beschikbaar maken van onderzoeksmateriaal en stimuleert het webgebaseerde samenwerking. De pilotprojecten, met een looptijd van een half jaar, zijn ingediend door negen instellingen in het hoger onderwijs.

Vier projecten richten zich vooral op de zogenaamde Collaboratories. Dit zijn webgebaseerde samenwerkingsomgevingen waarmee onderzoekers vanuit verschillende locaties samen kunnen werken en elkaars resultaten en bronnen kunnen delen.
Twee projecten zijn gericht op Open Access plus: het online publiceren van artikelen of andere onderzoekspublicaties zoals proefschriften, aangevuld met onderzoeksdata, modellen of visualiseringen, maar bijvoorbeeld ook openbare reviews of annotaties.

SURFshare
SURFfoundation, de kraamkamer van SURF voor innovatie in het hoger onderwijs en onderzoek, is in 2007 gestart met het SURFshare programma. Dit programma is de opvolger van DARE, dat gericht was op het realiseren van een netwerk van Digital Academic REpositories (digitale bewaarplaatsen van onderzoekspublicaties). Waar DARE erin slaagde 125.000 artikelen ‘Open Access’ toegankelijk te maken, gaat SURFshare nog verder door zich te richten op ‘verrijkte publicaties’. Hiermee wordt bedoeld dat niet alleen het artikel, maar bij het onderzoek behorende datasets, simulaties, modellen, visualisaties en dergelijke beschikbaar komen.

Marjan Vernooy-Gerritsen (programmamanager SURFshare) is tevreden over de uitslag van de tender. “Vooral de verscheidenheid en toepasbaarheid van de plannen spreekt mij aan. Voor SURFfoundation ligt de nadruk in deze projecten vooral in het uitproberen en gebruikers ervaring laten opdoen met diverse samenwerkingsomgevingen en minder op het uitbouwen van omgevingen. In deze fase van het SURFshare programma willen wij vooral praktijkervaring en inspiratie opdoen”.

    The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has granted 65.000 Euro to the VKS project:
    “Sociotechnologische aspecten van samenwerkingsprojecten in de sociaaleconomische geschiedenis”

    With this project the VKS wants to provide strategic support tot the IISH- project “Global hubs for global history”, which has received a KNAW support of 200.000 Euro.
    For this, VKS will deploy its expertise in the area of the functioning of collaboratories. We will attract a post doc researcher (part-time) for a two-year period to study and stimulate ‘best practices’ in building collaboratories. More in general, with this project VKS aims to study the role of advanced ICT in humanities and social studies.
