Two new Erasmus Studio projects have started
The Erasmus Studio project Transformations in Dutch corporations to be conducted under supervision by Johan Heilbron at the Department of Sociology (FSW, Erasmus University) started on 1 September 2009. The PhD student appointed for this project is Rob Timans.

Alexander Hogenboom’s PhD project (title: Argumentation Discovery in Economics Literature) has been approved by ESE (Erasmus School of Economics). The project leader of this Erasmus Studio project is Professor Uzay Kaymak (ESE) and the work will be carried out in collaboration with the EUR University Library. The starting date was 1 July 2009.

Academische Jaarprijs 08/09 van start met open inschrijving
Dinsdag 23 december 2009 is de vierde editie van de Academische Jaarprijs van start gegaan. Teams van studenten, promovendi en onderzoekers van Nederlandse universiteiten, UMC’s, bij KNAW of NWO aangesloten onderzoeksinstituten en andere publieke onderzoeksinstellingen krijgen de kans om op een niet alledaagse manier het belang van wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar buiten te brengen. Het team dat er naar oordeel van een deskundige jury het beste in slaagt om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te vertalen naar een breed publiek, wordt beloond met een hoofdprijs van 100.000 euro.

De eerste ronde van de prijs start vandaag. Tot 14 maart 2009 krijgen teams de tijd zich in te schrijven als deelnemer. Op basis van de ingediende onderzoeken en daarop toegesneden communicatievoorstellen nomineert de jury onder leiding van Rick van der Ploeg op 7 april 2009 acht teams voor de tweede ronde.

De genomineerde teams presenteren hun uitgewerkte plannen tijdens de Slotmanifestatie op 7 oktober 2009 aan de jury. Die kiest twee finalisten die ter afsluiting van de Slotmanifestatie strijden om de Academische Jaarprijs van 100.000 euro. Nieuw dit jaar is dat de VPRO in acht afleveringen van Noorderlicht Nieuws aandacht besteed aan portretten van de genomineerde teams.

Nieuwe partners editie 08/09

De editie 2008-2009 komt mede tot stand dankzij mediapartner VPRO en sponsoren Mercedes-Benz Nederland, Academic Transfer en Stichting Stadspartners Leiden. De Academische Jaarprijs is een initiatief van NRC Handelsblad in samenwerking met de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) en de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW).

De organisatie is in handen van de Stichting Academische Jaarprijs. De jury van de prijs, benoemd door het stichtingsbestuur, bestaat uit
Rick van der Ploeg (voorzitter), Adriana Esmeijer, Marja van der Putten, Piet Borst, Leo Halvers en Rob van Hattum.

Digitaal dromen over toekomst van wetenschap

Met de hulp van nieuwe media kunnen er allerlei nieuwe creatieve dwarsverbanden gelegd worden tussen de verschillende wetenschappelijke disciplines, aldus prof.dr. Paul Wouters, bijzonder hoogleraar Kennisdynamica aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Wouters ontwierp een website die de dromen van onderzoekers over de toekomst van de wetenschap moet samenbrengen.

Op vrijdag 27 juni 2008 presenteert Paul Wouters de website www.researchdreams.nl tijdens zijn oratie Dolend dromen van het wereldbrein. De leerstoel Kennisdynamica wordt gefinancierd door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen.

Proposal for new approach in information science

Information centred research should support online research
The emergence of new information sources associated with new technologies such as Websites and blogs seems set to continue and expand. Hence, there will probably be many initially plausible social science and humanities applications for data collected on a large scale from the new sources. This has created the need for a new information-centered style of research that seeks to identify which research problems the data sources may be useful for rather than assessing the data for a given research problem.
This is proposed by Mike Thelwall, Paul Wouters and Jenny Fry in a brief communication published by the Journal of Information Science and Technology.

Taaltechnologe Franciska de Jong over multimediale spraaktechnologie
‘Technologie veroudert, maar de kennis die er achter zit blijft relevant’. Dat zegt prof. dr. Franciska de Jong, leider van een aantal onderzoekprojecten waarin spraakherkenning een grote rol speelt, in een interview in e-data&research, juni 2008. De techniek om gesproken woord doorzoekbaar te maken komt steeds verder, blijkt uit een gesprek met de Twents-Rotterdamse taaltechnologe.

Officiële opening Maastricht Virtual Knowledge Studio op 14 november
Wat betekent digitalisering voor de sociale wetenschappen?

Nieuwe media en ICT hebben radicale gevolgen voor onze informatiesamenleving. Voor de natuur- en levenswetenschappen is de invloed van computer- en internetgebruik allang duidelijk. Zo zou de ontrafeling van het menselijk DNA in het genoomproject nooit mogelijk zijn geweest zonder het gebruik van gigantische databases en snelle internetverbindingen. In de sociale en geesteswetenschappen is het gebruik van digitale onderzoekstechnieken echter nog vrij nieuw. Met de oprichting van de Virtual Knowledge Studio neemt de Universiteit Maastricht de uitdaging aan om de invloed van nieuwe media en ICT op de sociale en geesteswetenschappen te bestuderen. Op 14 november viert de Maastricht Virtual Knowledge Studio, een gezamenlijk initiatief van de Universiteit Maastricht en de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen (KNAW), zijn officiële opening. Prof.dr. Sally Wyatt, per 1 november benoemd tot hoogleraar Digital Cultures in Development), heeft de wetenschappelijke leiding over het instituut.

De Maastricht Studio is één van de twee campuslocaties van de Virtual Knowledge Studio, waarvan de ‘moedervestiging’ is ondergebracht bij de KNAW in Amsterdam. In Maastricht ligt het accent op de geesteswetenschappen en de kwalitatieve sociale wetenschappen, terwijl de andere campus (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam) zich richt op de sociale wetenschappen. De Maastrichtse campus gaat van start met twee projecten. Het eerste project bestudeert hoe wetenschappelijke disciplines en maatschappelijke groeperingen omgaan met kennis die uit simulaties wordt vergaard. Simulatiemodellen worden steeds verder geperfectioneerd en spelen een steeds zwaardere rol in beslissingen over technologieën. Maar is dat wel verantwoord bij beslissingen met grote maatschappelijke consequenties?

Het tweede project bouwt voort op bestaand onderzoek van de Universiteit Maastricht naar het cultureel erfgoed van Maastricht, waarbij burgers en experts gezamenlijk de geschiedenis van Maastricht verzamelen en bewaren met digitale technologieën. Het project onderzoekt hoe men digitale archieven, die samen met burgers worden opgebouwd, bruikbaar maakt voor toekomstig gebruik door historici en stedenbouwkundigen. Opent zo’n digitale culturele biografie nieuwe perspectieven voor een stad?

“De Maastricht Studio is een spannende ontwikkeling voor de Universiteit Maastricht èn voor de KNAW”, aldus directeur Sally Wyatt. “Wetenschappers kunnen hier terecht met fundamentele onderzoeksvragen over de nieuwe gegevensstromen die door digitale technologieën worden gegenereerd. Dat levert nieuwe vragen maar ook nieuwe antwoorden op.” Wyatt studeerde in Canada en Engeland (Masteropleiding Theory of Economic Policy and Planning) en promoveerde aan de Universiteit Maastricht. De titel van haar proefschrift luidt ‘Technology’s Arrow, Developing Informaton Networks for Public Administration in Britain and the United States’. Sinds 1 mei 2006 is zij als senior research fellow verbonden aan de Virtual Knowledge Studio bij het KNAW. Per 1 november geeft zij daarnaast twee dagen per week leiding aan de Maastricht Studio.

Sally Wyatt co-promoter
On 26 September, Vanessa Dirksen successfully defended her PhD ‘Social Imaginaries of Technology and Work, A Connective Ethnography’ at the University of Amsterdam. Sally Wyatt was the co-promoter (Professor Rik Maes, Faculty of Economics, UvA, was the promoter) and Anne Beaulieu was a member of the committee.

Photography Competition Seeing Science

Capture the ‘magic of science’ on camera and you could win the KNAW Photo Competition! The competition will run from 1 June until 1 November 2007.

In 2008 the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) will celebrate its 200th anniversary. To mark this special occasion the KNAW will organise a number of scientific and festive events on the theme ‘the magic of science’, including a photography competition.

The intention of the photography competition is to share the magic of science (meaning all sciences including the social sciences and the humanities) with the world.

Paul Wouters will be one of the jury members.

Erasmus Studio – per 1 juni 2007 van start

Nieuwe media en informatietechnologie maken nieuwe vormen van onderzoek en kennis mogelijk. De Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam gaat deze e-research bevorderen. Hiertoe werd in september 2006 het startsein gegeven door de oprichting van de Erasmus Virtual Knowledge Studio (kortweg: Erasmus Studio). De Erasmus Studio gaat met ingang van 1 juni 2007 feitelijk van start, met de benoeming van Prof. Dr. Franciska de Jong als managing director (0,4 fte)

Franciska de Jong heeft een achtergrond in de taalwetenschap. Sinds 1992 is ze hoogleraar taaltechnologie aan de Universiteit Twente. Haar onderzoeksterrein daar is de toepassing van taal- en spraaktechnologie bij de ontsluiting van multimedia-archieven. Van 1985-1992 werkte zij als onderzoeker bij het Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium in Eindhoven. Zij is betrokken bij enkele Nederlandse onderzoeksprogramma’s, waaronder CATCH (NWO) en MultimediaN (BSIK) en participeert in het IST-programma van de EU. Sinds 2004 is zij lid van het NWO-gebiedsbestuur Geesteswetenschappen.

De Erasmus Studio is een subcentrum van het KNAW-instituut Virtual Knowledge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences (VKS) in Amsterdam dat in januari 2006 is opgericht. De Erasmus Studio wordt georganiseerd vanuit de FEW (Faculteit Economische Wetenschappen; penvoerder) en FSW (Faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen). De Erasmus Studio voert in de eerste twee jaar zes onderzoeksprojecten uit, met EUR-onderzoekers in de sociologie, bestuurskunde, bedrijfskunde, economie, medische informatica en gezondheidsonderzoek, en informatiewetenschappen. De Erasmus Studio zal ook een serie seminars opzetten over e-research, waaraan hoogleraren, gevorderde onderzoekers, promovendi en masterstudenten kunnen deelnemen. De EUR investeert de komende 4,5 jaar bijna 2 miljoen euro in de Erasmus Studio.

New Virtual Ethnography blog
The existence of this blog is in large part due to a visit to colleagues in Barcelona in May 2007. Following their example and encouragement, we are taking up a new practice, in the hope that this blog will provide the opportunity to explore another mediation of our work (besides articles and our website), to develop a voice, and to play with digital objects. It may also be a way to communicate and share within the virtual ethnography collaboratory of the VKS and across VKS projects in which ethnography figures prominently. In the first instance, it will serve as support for the upcoming event in Amsterdam.

Erasmus Virtual Knowledge Studio
On the 16 January 2007 the Erasmus Virtual Knowledge Studio was opened officially, co-organized by the Board of Governors of the Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Virtual Knowledge Studio.

The day after, the regional paper: De Limburger published an article expressing the intention of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the University Maastricht to open a Maastricht Virtual Knowledge Studio.

A Lecture by dr Henkjan Honing

At the launch of the Virtual Knowledge Studio , 11 October 2006, dr Henkjan Honing -who heads the Music Cognition Group at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC), University of Amasterdam (UVA)- gave a lecture on Rhythm and Timing.
The Benjamin Herman Trio, who gave a great concert at the Launch, provided live music for this lecture.

Erasmus Virtual Knowledge Studio started 4 September 2006

Erasmus University and VKS launch Erasmus Virtual Knowledge Studio KNAW

New Media and Information technologies have created possibilities for new forms of knowledge creation in the social sciences and humanities. The Erasmus University in Rotterdam aims to promote e-research. To intensify this effort, the VKS and the EUR have decided to work together in a new collaborative research centre, the Erasmus Virtual Knowledge Studio KNAW. The university will invest close to two million euro in the Erasmus Studio for the next 4,5 years.
